Designed for Hazardous Location Performance
Hazardous location lighting requires more than lumen output. Fixtures must withstand extreme conditions while meeting strict safety requirements. LED Living hazardous location luminaires are designed to:
- Comply with Class I, II, and III hazardous location classifications
- Support Division and Zone–rated applications, including international projects
- Withstand heat, vibration, moisture, dust, and corrosive atmospheres
- Deliver high efficacy to reduce energy consumption and maintenance cycles
- Provide long service life in continuous-duty industrial environments
These solutions are ideal for new construction, retrofit projects, and mission-critical operations.
Typical Hazardous Location Applications
LED Living hazardous location luminaires support a wide range of industrial environments:
Oil & Gas Facilities
Used in upstream, midstream, and downstream applications including compressor stations, pump rooms, refineries, and loading areas where flammable gases and vapors are present.
Chemical & Petrochemical Processing
Designed for environments handling volatile chemicals and solvents requiring Class I and Class II compliant lighting under continuous operation.
Grain Handling & Bulk Material Processing
Ideal for grain elevators, silos, mills, and conveying systems where combustible dust creates Class II hazardous conditions.
Wastewater & Sewage Treatment
Reliable illumination for digesters, headworks, and enclosed process areas exposed to methane gas, moisture, and corrosive conditions.
Marine, Coastal, and Offshore Facilities
Engineered for docks, shipyards, offshore platforms, and coastal facilities exposed to salt spray, humidity, and vibration.
Heavy Manufacturing & Power Generation
Used in classified manufacturing zones, foundries, power plants, paint spray areas, and material handling facilities.
Hazardous Location Classification Overview
Understanding hazardous location classifications is essential when specifying compliant lighting.
Classes
| Class | Hazard Type | Typical Materials | Common Applications |
|---|---|---|---|
| Class I | Flammable gases or vapors | Hydrogen, methane, propane | Oil & gas, chemical plants |
| Class II | Combustible dust | Grain, flour, metal dust | Grain handling, mills |
| Class III | Ignitable fibers | Cotton, wood shavings | Textile, woodworking |
Divisions
| Division | Description |
|---|---|
| Division 1 | Hazard present under normal conditions |
| Division 2 | Hazard present under abnormal conditions |
Groups & Zones Reference
| System | Designation | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| NEC Groups | Groups A–D (gases), Groups E–G (dusts) | Defines the explosive characteristics of materials |
| IEC / ATEX Zones | Zone 0/1/2 (gases), Zone 20/21/22 (dusts) | Indicates frequency and duration of hazard |
Inspector-Facing: Class vs. Division Explained
Hazardous location classifications are defined by the type of hazardous material present (Class) and the likelihood of that hazard being present (Division). The Class identifies whether flammable gases or vapors (Class I), combustible dust (Class II), or ignitable fibers or flyings (Class III) may exist.
The Division further defines operating conditions—Division 1 indicates the hazard exists under normal operating conditions, while Division 2 indicates the hazard is present only under abnormal conditions such as equipment failure or leaks. Correct classification ensures lighting equipment is properly selected, installed, and approved for safe operation in classified environments.
